Dragon Champion by E.E. Knight

Dragon Champion

I started Dragon Champion by E.E. Knight last night. It has been ages since I have started a new book, and the last one I started I was reading in such short spurts over such a long time I will have to start again from the beginning.

It was nice to get back to some fantasy, I have been on a sci-fi kick for the past few years. I took a sci-fi lit class, and then decided I would start reading Hugo Award winners. This book is different because the main character, Auron, is a young dragon. It is told entirely from his perspective. The reader experiences new things as he does: the first time he sees dwarves, elves, humans, learning to hunt and swim. It is interesting to experience things from this point of view, but, so far I feel like an opportunity is being lost.

This book seems to lack the rich descriptions that are a staple of fantasy novels. Being told from the point of view of a dragon, I expected that Auron would see things differently than a human. I love books written from the point of view of other races, they often possess senses that humans do not, giving the reader insight into situations they they could never experience in reality. It may be that Auron has not developed these senses yet, I am only about 100 pages in, and he is still young, but, I feel like a dragon should have a more acute sense of what is happening around him.

What this book lacks in description, it has made up for in plot. A lot has happened in the first 100 pages. It is a very fast paced story, and I was attached to the character from the beginning. I hope that the storytelling matures with the character and the author introduces deeper, rich environments. If it does, I will definitely stick around for the rest of the trilogy.
