Windows 7 x64 on my MacBook Pro

It was a very exciting Christmas for one such as myself, although it was not without it’s troubles, finding a tiny tiny Phillips head and a T-6 Torx screwdriver for example. Let me explain, for Chrismas I got a new Seagate 500 gb 7200 rpm hard drive that I was excessively excited about. What I didn’t expect was my complete inability to open my laptop case. I had to wait until the day after Christmas before going to 3 stores before finding a small enough Torx screwdriver to get past the memory cover.

Once the case was open it was pretty much smooth sailing. If you are looking to swap out the hard drive in a MacBook Pro – first gen, not unibody check out these instructions from Extreme Tech, they worked perfectly for me.

After dropping in my new hard drive and putting the case back together the problems returned. The original OSX Tiger disks that came with my laptop wouldn’t boot. I should have expected this having had trouble with them earlier, but I was optimistic, maybe they would work now… They didn’t.

So, with very limited options and no one with Mac OS disks within driving distance I threw in my XP disks and low and behold, I had an operating system. I only considered the pitfalls of not having Mac OS on my Mac for about five minutes before deciding I probably would be fine without it (more about that later: I was wrong). XP loaded perfectly and once it was finished I moved promptly to installing the Windows 7 upgrade.

Being a student is a very wonderful thing. I got my copy of Windows 7 x64 from the school for a whopping seven dollars, Merry Christmas to me!

As soon as I dropped in that disc however, another problem arose:

1.
2.
Select CD-ROM boot type

I still have very little idea of what this means, but www.jowie.com has an awesome post about how to burn a new ISO that will boot on a MacBook Pro. He has screen shots, and isoBurn worked perfectly, just one check box (don’t add ‘;1′ Version Numbers to Files) that you have to change from the original disc and it worked like a charm.

After burning the ISO to a new disc and booting from that disc the install went smoothly. But then I tried to install drivers. Josh Anderson has a good post on his site that was able to answer all my questions from here on out. Also, looking through his posts he is a huge Lost fan, so major points there.

Once again, not a huge hurtle, but I never upgraded to Snow Leopard, and my Leopard disk only had 32 bit drivers on it. I tried downloading drivers from rapid share (apple doesn’t have them available for download, I wish they did) but was still missing some keyboard support.

I finally got my hands on a friend’s Snow Leopard disk but then this error got thrown:

BootCamp x64 is unsupported on this model

All it takes is a few lines in command prompt (run as an admin), but I never would have figured that out on my own.

cd /d D:
cd Boot Camp\Drivers\Apple
BootCamp64.ms

Viola, model check averted, BootCamp installed.

All in all Windows 7 runs great. I was a little weary of upgrading after seeing how Vista had ravished my mom’s and brother’s computers but I have had no trouble at all. It is just as fast if not faster than XP and now I can use all four gigs of ram.

If anyone is questioning the upgrade, I say, if you have the hard drive space, go for it. I love what Microsoft has done with the OS (mostly cause it is more like OSX) and now that I have it running I can play Borderlands and run Photoshop (Not at the same time of course, that would go very very badly) without having to restart my computer.

DAAP has infiltrated my dreams

Most people dream about far off places, or trippy LSD like worlds where their brother is actually a monkey.  But not me.  Last night I dreamt about CSS.  Even my subconscious is boring, I blame DAAP.  I made the University of Cincinnati Equestrian Team website last year and built a CMS so that I wouldn’t have to do upkeep on the site.  Well, according to my dream last night they put a repeating image of Christmas trees in the background, and had center aligned all the text on the site.

This is what my nightmares come to, repeated backgrounds and center aligned text.  My life is sad.  Given, they really did center align text on the home page, which really pissed me off, but I go over it (obviously).  But really, subconscious, could you send me some more interesting and exciting dreams please?

Crazy Christmas Card

2009 Johnson Christmas Card

My family tends to create crazy christmas cards. This year’s idea credit goes to my brother Zach, and I really like it. It was a little embarrassing taking this photograph out in our street while out neighbors and at least 12 of their extended family members came out to chat before their evening walk, but other than that, the process was entirely painless. Thanks for the background image goes to husz from Deviant art. It was the perfect angle to add my siblings and myself to and doing a google search for an alley picture was a lot easier than going through all of my old photographs or driving out to take one myself.

I know the copy isn’t great, we had a lot of trouble coming up with something, but it works I guess. Anyone else have fun or creative christmas cards?

wordpress woes

I just did something stupid.

It isn’t wordpress’ fault, mostly just mine. so word to the wise, when wordpress says you should upgrade, back up first. I wasn’t thinking at all, just turned on wordpress and saw the same link at the top asking my to upgrade that has been there for weeks. As I was in a decently good mood and willing to let go of a few seconds of my time (I hate upgrading, I have to be in the perfect upgrading mood to actually do it) I decided to just take care of it, mostly to get the banner to go away in wp-admin. As I clicked the automatically upgrade button I realized my mistake. I had edited many of the default theme pages and made huge changes to the CSS without backing up any of these files.

Usually I am good at remembering to back up, but I guess we can add this to the list of lessons I learned the hard way, right underneath putting oil in your car so the engine doesn’t blow up.

Now I get to spend the next few hours trying to re-do all my CSS and PHP edits, and then performing a thorough back up of my site.

Dammit.

Kentucky in the fall

a fall road

It was raining today while I was driving and I love the reflection of the fall trees on a wet road. I thought this was really pretty; however, in hind sight, sitting right on the other side of a blind turn taking pictures may not have been a brilliant idea.

Forgive the quality of this and all the other photos on the site, they were all taken with my iPhone, and there is only so much Photoshop can do to remedy that.

Totally worth the drive

Road Tripping to see Jonathan Coulton

I have now purchased tickets to two of Jonathan Coulton’s shows this coming weekend. If I went to see him both times I think could end up being the best weekend ever, but, honestly, thats not so much an option as I’m pretty sure my boss would not be cool with me missing both Friday and Monday to see the same concert.

Why would one buy tickets to see the same show twice you might ask. Well that would be a brilliant question. High School bands are crazy. That’s it. I wasn’t really aware of this, being that I quit band before 9th grade, the trumpet just wasn’t my calling. But my brother’s still there, and he’s pretty much the only one willing to drive hours to see JC with me. So yeah, I bought tickets for Friday nights show before realizing that Friday night was a football game, and therefore mandatory for all bandies to attend. I of course put these tickets at will call to avoid shipping fees, so I’m pretty much out of luck on those. When I found out he couldn’t come Friday, and all three of my friends bailed on me, sad I know, I bought tickets for Sunday somewhere in Wisconsin, guess I should probably look up where. Whereever it is I know I have to drive 8 hours to get there, and It means I get to skip out on work on Monday, so overall, a win I’d say. I will definitely be posting about the show, come Monday or Tuesday, I cannot wait. You get that many geeks in one room and it is sure to be a good time.

404 Sighting

a boring hall way with a door labeled 404

This is the only empty office on my floor, coincidence? I think not.

I am very easily amused, especially when It comes to finding 404’s in my everyday life, for some reason it always makes me smile. I have been walking by this office everyday for the past 5 weeks and I still enjoy it. A new company moved in; I was worried they would ruin my only source of amusement in an otherwise bleak walk from elevator to office, but we are safe, they are moving into 405. Shwew.
